APAYAO SENSE-SATION

Building on this foundation of conservation and community values, the Apayao Sense-sation initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It advances SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by creating livelihood opportunities in guiding, homestays, handicrafts, and local food enterprises; promotes SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through zero-waste efforts, sustainable design, and resource management via the Lapat System; and supports SDG 15 (Life on Land) by protecting biodiversity and engaging visitors in conservation-driven tourism.

The Apayao Sense-sation is a 3-day community-based cultural tour that highlights Apayao’s heritage, traditions, and people. Moving beyond its reputation for adventure tourism, the package centers on the Five Senses Circuit—a multi-sensory journey through Apayao’s seven municipalities: Calanasan, Conner, Kabugao, Luna, Flora, Pudtol, and Sta. Marcela.

Each stop offers a distinct cultural experience engaging one of the five senses—hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch—through traditional music, crafts, cuisine, and storytelling. Visitors collect stamps on their “Sense-sational Travel Pass”and receive mini souvenirs symbolizing each sensory encounter, deepening their connection to local communities.

By blending culture, sustainability, and authentic interaction, Apayao Sense-sation creates lasting emotional ties between travelers and the province. It offers not just a journey through landscapes and traditions, but an invitation to truly feel, understand, and remember Apayao—a destination where culture and nature thrive in harmony

Sustainable community-based tourism cooperatives will be formed, composed of local guides, workshop facilitators, and indigenous community members, to manage and facilitate the Apayao Sense-sation tour. They will oversee tourism operations, as well as budget allocation and revenue distribution across Apayao’s seven municipalities, providing livelihood opportunities and promoting community ownership, with support from the LGU, DOT Apayao, and private sponsors.

In the heart of the Philippine Cordilleras lies Apayao, one of only four UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in the Philippines (UNESCO, n.d.). Recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, vibrant culture, and deep commitment to environmental stewardship, Apayao—known as the “Last Frontier of the North”—boasts pristine forests, winding rivers, and serves as a sanctuary for the rare Philippine Eagle. Its natural and cultural treasures are protected through the Lapat System, a traditional Isnag practice that preserves both heritage and the environment (Apayao Tourism Office, 2024; DOT–CAR, 2017).

MISSION

To create immersive, inclusive, and sustainable travel experiences that connect visitors with Apayao’s seven municipalities through the five senses. Our mission is to empower communities, preserve indigenous culture, and protect the environment, promoting responsible tourism, local pride, and shared growth while strengthening Apayao’s identity as a harmonious and sustainable destination.

PRODUCT OBJECTIVE

To develop and promote Apayao Sense-sation: Nature’s Heart, Culture’s Soul as a sustainable, community-based cultural tourism product that enhances visitor experiences, supports local livelihoods, and strengthens Apayao’s identity as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the “Last Nature Frontier of the North.” This initiative recognizes Apayao’s growing potential as a sustainable destination and seeks to address existing challenges in its tourism industry while fostering innovation, inclusivity, and cultural preservation.

VISION

We envision Apayao as a multi-sensory paradise of the North, where tourists experience nature’s treasures and the Iyapayao’s vibrant culture. As a premier destination for community-based and sustainable tourism, Apayao celebrates the harmony of culture, nature, and people — inspiring travelers to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the province’s authentic way of life while promoting environmental conservation, local pride, and inclusive growth.

GOAL

To increase the contribution of tourism to local socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, and environmental conservation in Apayao through multi-sensory, community-based tourism initiatives.
